Verdict
Is Devin's free desktop plan a useful start, and when do cloud agents justify a paid plan?
The Free plan lists a light usage quota with limited models, unlimited inline edits and unlimited Tab completions. Pro ($20 a month) adds higher quotas, frontier models, free use of SWE-2 and access to Devin Cloud.
Who should consider it. Consider it if you want to hand whole tasks to agents and review the resulting pull requests.
Start here: first steps with Devin
Editorial guidance based on the vendor details we recorded. We have not tested Devin, and we do not describe its screens or settings.
- Who should start with it
- Teams that want to delegate engineering tasks to cloud agents that return pull requests.
- Before you create an account
- Pick one real job, for example "Get help coding", and prepare invented or non-sensitive input for the first try.
- Read the vendor's data and privacy terms. Our privacy review checklist lists what to look for.
- Commercial-use terms: we have not verified them. Read the vendor's terms for the plan you will use.
- Which plan to start with
- Start on the free plan. The limits we recorded: Light quota; limited model availability; unlimited inline edits and Tab completions; 1 member.
- A first small task
- Try a small version of a real case like this one: A developer trying the free desktop plan with unlimited Tab completions.
- How to tell whether it helps
- Time the job by hand first. Then record minutes taken, minutes of editing and credits or usage used. Use the trial scorecard.
- Common first-week mistakes
- Spending credits or usage on experiments without noting how much one job used.
- Adding seats before you know the tool works for you, or missing a seat minimum.
- Building a routine on a free limit that resets daily or never, without checking which.
- Putting private or customer data in before reading how the vendor handles it.
- When to consider another tool
- Anyone who needs published request counts: the page does not give them.
- Anyone who wants flat team pricing: Teams is $80 a month plus $40 a month for each full developer seat.
Alternatives: Cursor, GitHub Copilot. Reasons to switch.
What Devin actually does
- Runs agents in the cloud or on your machine that write code, test in their own browser and prepare pull requests.
- Splits large tasks across parallel cloud agents and reports back.
- Joins conversations when tagged in Slack or Teams, and can run automations for bugs and failed CI.
- Includes code mapping (DeepWiki), review (Devin Review) and an API listed in the plan comparison.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
Good fits
- A developer trying the free desktop plan with unlimited Tab completions.
- An engineering team that wants cloud agents triggered from Slack, Linear or Jira.
Scenarios are illustrative, based on plan limits and documented features.
Consider alternatives if
- Anyone who needs published request counts: the page does not give them.
- Anyone who wants flat team pricing: Teams is $80 a month plus $40 a month for each full developer seat.
Practical workflows
Illustrative: built from documented features, not from testing.
Delegate a bug fix and review the pull request
Outcome: A pull request you have reviewed before merging
- Describe the bug and how to reproduce it in a task for Devin Cloud, or tag @Devin in Slack.
- Let the agent work and open a pull request.
- Read the diff and the test results it reports.
- Request changes or close the pull request if it misses the point.

- Beyond the allowance, extra usage is purchased at API pricing.
- Concurrent sessions: up to 10 on Free and Pro, unlimited on Max and Teams.
