Basic ($12 a month billed yearly) includes the full Assistant and Search, Smart Citation reports, collections of up to 1,000 papers and 250 MCP credits a month. Pro ($40) adds API access, 2,500 MCP credits, collections of up to 10,000 papers and patent, clinical-trial and grant datasets.
Who should consider it. Consider it if you need to see how a paper has been cited and want API access for your own tools.
Start here: first steps with Scite
Editorial guidance based on the vendor details we recorded. We have not tested Scite, and we do not describe its screens or settings.
- Who should start with it
- Checking how papers cite each other, with an API on the Pro plan.
- Before you create an account
- Pick one real job, for example "Research academic papers", and prepare invented or non-sensitive input for the first try.
- Read the vendor's data and privacy terms. Our privacy review checklist lists what to look for.
- Commercial-use terms: we have not verified them. Read the vendor's terms for the plan you will use.
- Which plan to start with
- No free plan is confirmed. Start with the free trial. Basic and Pro each offer a 7-day free trial. After it ends you are enrolled in the plan you chose unless you cancel first.
- A first small task
- Try a small version of a real case like this one: A researcher checking whether a paper has been supported or contradicted by later work.
- How to tell whether it helps
- Time the job by hand first. Then record minutes taken, minutes of editing and anything the plan limits. Use the trial scorecard.
- Common first-week mistakes
- Putting private or customer data in before reading how the vendor handles it.
- When to consider another tool
- Anyone who wants a free plan: only the 7-day trial is offered.
- Anyone who cannot give a payment method for the trial: it converts automatically unless you cancel.
Alternatives: Elicit, Consensus. Reasons to switch.

Vet a paper before citing it
Outcome: A decision on whether to cite a paper, with the citation context you checked
- Search for the paper and open its Smart Citation report.
- Read how later papers cite it, and note any that dispute it.
- Add it to a collection with your notes.
- Open the original citing passages before you rely on the summary.
