AI image tools

AI image tools differ less in the pictures they make than in what you may do with them. Licence and ownership terms often change by plan, and free-plan images are sometimes public.

Credit and token systems vary widely, so compare the free allowance, the cost of a typical image and whether unlimited relaxed modes cover the models you want.

How to choose in this category

Who this is for

Sellers, marketers and creators who need generated images, edited product photos or backgrounds, and who must know what they may use the results for.

Problems it solves

  • Removing or replacing a product photo background.
  • Generating illustrations or backgrounds.
  • Knowing whether an image may be used commercially.

How to choose

  1. Decide whether you need generation, editing of your own photos, or both.
  2. Check commercial-use terms for the plan you will use: free and paid plans differ.
  3. Compare free allowances and what the free export removes.
  4. Test the same image or prompt in two tools and check edges and fine detail.
  5. Price paid plans by credits or exports, and note the currency.

Free plans, costs and data in this category

Free image plans differ most on rights. Recraft's page says free-plan images are owned by Recraft and not licensed for commercial use. Pixelcut lists a commercial licence on paid plans and is silent on its free plan. Adobe Firefly's page says outputs from its own models can be used commercially, while partner-model outputs are the customer's responsibility to assess.

Counted from our records of the 8 tools here: 5 have a confirmed free plan, 1 offer only a free trial, 4 price per seat, 7 meter credits or usage, and 4 show prices without naming the currency.

Cost and billing warnings

  • Credits and tokens are vendor-defined units and do not compare across tools.
  • Canva's prices were read in rupees from the India page; Adobe Firefly names USD; most others show "$" without a currency name.
  • Midjourney's page says companies above a stated revenue threshold must buy a higher plan.
  • remove.bg's standalone site is scheduled to close on 1 December 2026, according to its own page.

Privacy, data and licensing questions

  • Check who owns an image and what you may do with it, per plan. Terms can change when you downgrade or cancel.
  • Do not upload photos you do not have the right to edit.
  • Check whether free-plan images are public.
  • Content credentials and watermarks differ by tool; check the export.

We have not verified any vendor's data handling and do not give legal advice. See the privacy review checklist.

Best first steps before paying

  1. Run one product photo through two tools and inspect the edges at 100% zoom.
  2. Read the commercial-use terms for the plan you would actually use.
  3. Check what the free export removes: watermark, resolution or size.
  4. Use the product-photo quality checklist before publishing.

What to look for

Ownership and licence by plan

Recraft states that free-plan images are owned by Recraft and not licensed for commercial use, while paid plans grant ownership. Midjourney and Adobe publish their own terms. Read the plan-specific terms before client work.

Free allowance

Daily tokens, signup credits and monthly credits are different things. Check how the free allowance resets.

Credit cost per image

Ideogram publishes credits per image by model and quality. Where a vendor does not, estimate with a few test images.

Privacy of creations

Free creations on some tools are public. Private generation usually starts on a paid plan.
